Bandage gate: the latest media witch hunt to attempt to derail the career of 22-year-old J.J. McCarthy

Locked in: J.J. McCarthy sizes up the Detroit Lions.

Minnesota sports can’t seem to have nice things, or perhaps I should rephrase that, Minnesota doesn’t want to have nice things.

Despite Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell’s reassurances, local media reporters and social media fan accounts went into meltdown this week. J.J. McCarthy was limited on Wednesday’s practice with a hand injury, ahead of a critical divisional matchup against the Chicago Bears this coming Sunday. McCarthy was pictured throwing left-handed with a ‘bandage’ as thin as a blister plaster on his right, throwing hand.

The injury was sustained during the Vikings’ 27–19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, when McCarthy stepped up in the pocket and fired a dart to Justin Jefferson in the end zone. During the process of his follow-through, his right hand collided with the helmet of an onrushing defender. Despite this whack, McCarthy continued to fight until the end and showed no visible signs of discomfort.

There is no denying that McCarthy has had an injury-riddled start to his NFL career. In 2024, he missed the entire season with a torn meniscus, and in 2025, he has missed five weeks of game action with a high ankle sprain sustained in a frustrating 22–6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

There is also no denying that McCarthy needs reps. The upcoming divisional showdown on Sunday would mark only his fifth start in the NFL since he was drafted as the face of the franchise in April 2024. So, I completely understand the desperation and urgency of getting McCarthy on the field as the prospect of playing playoff football slowly trickles away.

However, one thing I will not stand for is deliberate exaggeration and fear-mongering, which has sent this fanbase into a frenzy. It’s almost as if certain individuals wish for eternal misery on this team rather than the much easier task of just rooting for them.

Sadly, I think this reflects the state of society that we’re living in these days. We’re in the era of hiding behind faceless social media accounts, throwing around false accusations as if it’s a daily routine, whilst facing zero consequences or accountability.

Everyone seems so obsessed with perfection and instant gratification. Regardless of their past triumphs, if coaches, players or teams don’t help achieve instant success, they will come under fire, with a barrage of relentless abuse with little to no evidence.

I fear the same individuals who are referring to a bruise on the hand as ‘soft benching’ or ‘injury bust’ were the same who attempted to tear down Sam Darnold or Kirk Cousins at every opportunity.

But here’s the truth: perfection doesn’t exist, development takes time, and there are always two sides to every story.

Has this season been bitterly disappointing compared to pre-season expectations? Yes. But does this mean that J.J. McCarthy is a bust? No.

The Minnesota Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, and they also haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1977. Additionally, in the team’s 65-year history, they have only drafted five quarterbacks in the first round: Tommy Kramer (1977), Daunte Culpepper (1999), Christian Ponder (2011), Teddy Bridgewater (2014) and J.J. McCarthy (2024).

The bottom line is they don’t draft young quarterbacks very often. The franchise tends to lean on the experienced rather than the youthful. But where has that got us?

The hand injury sustained this past week is nothing short of a bruise, and that’s that. Kevin O’Connell and J.J. McCarthy couldn’t have been any clearer when speaking to the media. The incident was blown out of proportion. Simply put, this is the NFL. It’s a grown man’s game, and everyone is playing with bangs and bruises in some capacity.

The reality is that J.J. McCarthy is the most scrutinised quarterback in his second year that I have ever seen, not only by the national media but by local media and the team’s own fans.
